REVIEWS & PUBLICATIONS

Rounds, folds and shadows are among the ingredients of “Luscious Fruit/Hardcore Drapery,” Ann Schlesinger’s bold still-life show at Washington Studio School. The pears, limes and cherries are brightly hued and voluptuously modeled, and rendered in styles that range from impressionism to futurism. The creased fabrics appear geometric and architectural, sometimes in a way that resembles Soviet constructivism. The local artist combines these various approaches in single picture, juxtaposing sketchy line work and saturated blocks of color. There may not be an infinite number of ways to look at such familiar subjects as apples and tablecloths, but Schlesinger doesn’t seem to be running out of views.
